Discovering the Magic of a Holiday Ski Vacation: From London to Zermatt
Family Time in London
This past December, I had the incredible opportunity to take a family vacation to London for two weeks. It was especially meaningful because I got to spend quality time with my sister, who I hadn't seen in six months since she relocated to London for her job. The holidays felt magical, enriched by family ties and the unique atmosphere that London offers.
A Winter Wonderland in Zermatt
From London, we headed to Zurich and caught a train to Zermatt, a renowned ski village in Switzerland. The journey itself was surreal, like something out of a winter wonderland. We stayed at Monte Rosa, a quaint, traditional hotel that was simply perfect for us. Its authentic Swiss Alps vibe offered a cozy retreat after each exhilarating day on the slopes. My room provided stunning views of both the surrounding mountains and a charming town square below.
The Monte Rosa Experience
Each morning, the hotel’s ski boot room offered a pleasant surprise. The locker designated for each guest contained placeholders with built-in dryers. So, when it was time to hit the slopes, our gear was ready and comfortable. Given the mediocre snow quality at the lower elevations, we opted to ski near the top, which is glacier territory. Not only did this provide us with high-quality snow, but it also offered breathtaking views.
Why A Ski Guide Elevates Your Experience
During one of the days, we enlisted the help of a ski guide, which I wholeheartedly recommend. Ski guides know the mountains & their slopes’ by memory. They can navigate you through the best trails based on current conditions, saving you time and enhancing your skiing experience. Our guide also offered invaluable tips to improve our skills. Being guided felt like skiing royalty; we became "passenger princesses" for the day, focusing solely on the joy of skiing.
Apres-Ski Delights: Chez Vrony
One of my favorite après-ski spots was Chez Vrony, an upscale yet relaxed place perfect for family catch-ups over lunch and Swiss Wine. Getting a reservation can be challenging, so book in advance. I handle such details for my CFS clients. And oh, the view of the sun setting behind the Matterhorn? Absolutely unforgettable.
Vibrant Nightlife in a Quaint Setting
Despite its quaintness, Zermatt is far from a sleepy town. The area boasts a range of dining options and some rather unique late-night bars. During our visit, the crowd was an eclectic mix of well-traveled Europeans, although there were fewer Americans than usual due to a less-than-ideal snow season.
Don't Skip the Swiss Wine:
Before wrapping up, let me put in a good word for Swiss wine. Valais, the region where Zermatt is located, accounts for nearly half of Switzerland's wine production and is particularly famous for its Pinot Noir. Swiss wines are somewhat of a hidden gem, with only about 1% making it to the European market and even less reaching the United States.
Other Notable Hotels in Zermatt
Mont Cervin Palace: Offers the most amenities and excellent family suite options.
Schweizerhof Zermatt: Less traditional, more contemporary design.
CERVO Mountain Resort: A blend of contemporary and traditional styles, located a bit farther from the town but offers a complimentary shuttle.
Final Thoughts
A ski trip to Zermatt offers a blend of sport, luxury, and gastronomy that’s hard to beat. If you're planning your next ski adventure, I'd be thrilled to bring my firsthand experience and expertise to make it an unforgettable one.

Insider Travel Advisor Notes: Planning a Luxury Zermatt Ski Trip
After visiting Zermatt during the holiday season and working with many clients planning ski trips to the Swiss Alps, here are a few additional insider tips I often share.
Choosing the Right Hotel in Zermatt
Zermatt has an incredible range of luxury hotels, but the best choice really depends on the type of ski trip you want.
Mont Cervin Palace
One of my top recommendations. The location is right in the center of town, the service feels truly Swiss and polished, and they have a rare three-bedroom suite that is not widely advertised online.
CERVO Mountain Resort
Trendier, younger energy with ski-in ski-out access. Great if being directly on the slopes is the priority, although it sits slightly above town with a complimentary shuttle available.
Schweizerhof Zermatt
Contemporary, refined design with a true five-star feel.
Monte Rosa
Traditional and charming with strong service. Ideal for travelers seeking authentic alpine character.
Zermatt itself is completely car-free, which adds to its charm. Guests arrive by train and transfer to hotels via small electric buggies.
Why Zermatt Is One of the Most Snow-Secure Resorts in Europe
One reason I love sending clients to Zermatt is its reliability for snow. With glacier skiing available at higher elevations, it’s one of the most dependable European ski destinations for early and late season travel.
Experiences That Elevate a Zermatt Ski Vacation
Beyond skiing, Zermatt offers incredible experiences that many travelers don’t realize are available:
Private ski guides who know the mountain intimately and can tailor routes based on current conditions
Sunrise skiing experiences before the slopes officially open
Private snowcat rides for candlelit mountain dinners, one of the most magical alpine experiences I’ve done
Nighttime sledding on one of the highest groomed sled runs in the Alps
The Gornergrat railway and Glacier Paradise cable car, both offering iconic Matterhorn views
Apres-Ski and Dining Recommendations
Chez Vrony remains one of my favorite lunch spots on the mountain. Relaxed but elevated with unforgettable Matterhorn views. Reservations are strongly recommended in high season.
And don’t overlook Swiss wine. The Valais region produces exceptional Pinot Noir that rarely makes it outside Switzerland, making it a special discovery for visitors.
